Implementing a sucessful rewards system in secondary schoools

1. Define clear goals and criteria- Indentify the rewards day scheme and what they will be celebrating eg. levels of attendance, behaviour, academic achievement or a combination of all three.
2. Involve Students in planning- Seek input from the student representatives to understand what activities they would value. Offer a choice of activities eg active games like Zorbing and Tag Archery or table top fun like QuidGames problem solving and teambuilding events
3. Incorporate Practical Experiences- Blend the fun with life-skills such as achery or problem solving. We know that students value practical experiences rather than monetry incentives such as amazon vouchers.

We know from our experience of working with schools to produce a valued rewards system, creating regular rewards are important in embedding a positive school culture. For example we work with a number of schools to give students something to look forward to which is not too far in future, ensuring that reward for good behaviour and attendance is never to far away. Using a points system or house points is also an excellent way to keep students motivated. We suggest every half term works well. From our 24 years experience of working in education we also know that when students return from a holiday cross school attendance may drop, so it might also be worth considering a rewards day on the first week back to re-energise the school for the new term. Little and often really is the key when implementing a sucessful rewards system in a school.
